There’s always a good reason to visit the dentist

The American Dental Association recommends you see your dentist at least twice a year for a comprehensive dental exam. Maintaining your oral health is crucial in avoiding pain, tooth loss and expensive restorative dentistry procedures.

With a comprehensive exam every six months, we can manage small dental problems before they grow into larger, more complicated issues. Untreated cavities can grow rapidly and destroy an entire tooth, a cracked tooth may break off in not discovered and corrected, and gum disease can advance if not detected early. Advanced gum disease can cause tooth loss and lead to serious health issues such as oral cancer, which causes more than 7,500 deaths each year. Catching these problems early is essential in controlling them.

Check-ups make a difference

People over the age of four or five should visit their dentist for a professional hygiene cleaning at least twice a year. To maintain oral health, it’s very important that you stay up to speed on the condition of your teeth, so that if problems are detected, they can be treated early to avoid developing more serious issues. At Dobson Dental, we provide comfortable, gentle hygiene cleanings, specifically to detect, deter and prevent gum disease. If we find a cause for concern, we may recommend a deep gum cleaning to remove tartar below the gum line, smooth out surfaces where plaque builds up and eliminate bacterial infection.

Screen For Oral Cancer

As your dentist, we continually look for medical advances and treatments to ensure that my team and I are delivering the best possible care we can. Of particular concern to us is oral cancer.

Did you know that oral cancer is the sixth deadliest cancer in the world with roughly 30,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed each year? As a result, oral cancer claims one life an hour here in the United States – more than the number of lives lost to skin or cervical cancer. Close to three-quarters of these new cases are detected in the later stages of development giving these individuals a five-year survival rate but only 50% generally survive. Unfortunately, the survival rate hasn’t decreased significantly in the past 40 years. However, when detected and treated early, oral cancer can be 90% curable.

Oral cancer is a growing problem among people age 40 and older and, especially among smokers, smokeless tobacco users and, drinkers. However, according to the American Dental Association, more than 25% of those who are diagnosed with oral cancer, including those under the age of 30, have no lifestyle risk factors do not fall into these categories.
